GROUND CONDITIONS

DESIGN STUDIO ALPHA -
THE UNIVERSITY OF MELBOURNE

SEMESTER 2, 2021

Architectural analysis - specifically of temporal movements in a space and of the sun - help to inform all designs, but especially in this project, making a space-specific installation at Newman College (Naarm/Melbourne).

To more accurately understand and describe the sun patterns around Newman College (buildings and trees). Explored using Rhino 3D software and edited and colored using Adobe Illustrator, emphasizing multiple times of day and stretching shadows. This emphasizes the elaborate designs and layouts of Walter Burley Griffin.

Multiple views of a suggested design created to sit inside the Newman College grounds. The design actively employs the natural light of the Quadrangle, and the dynamic nature of this as it changes throughout the day. Including hidden crawl spaces, ground level and multiple climbable elements, the design is created with a multitude of audiences and users in mind. The designs have been hand rendered.

A physical model of the proposed design, detailing the positions of the mirrors and their reflective properties. The large tower acts as a periscope from the underground level, to the highest level, creating senses of the sky underground, and multiple selves. While created by hand, figures and edited has been added on Adobe Photoshop.
